The earlier landscape
Before Bellagio, the site was associated with the Dunes. The Neon Museum dates the Dunes’ opening to 1955 and its closure to 1993. Its separate demolition account identifies the north tower in the 27 October 1993 implosion. Those are distinct events in the history of the land on which the later resort was built.
A successor property can dominate public memory so thoroughly that the earlier landscape becomes difficult to imagine. Recovering the older name is not merely a nostalgic exercise: it restores the sequence of ownership, construction and removal that produced the present setting.

Construction and opening
MGM’s property-history FAQ dates the start of Bellagio’s construction to May 1996. MGM MIRAGE’s Form 10-K for 2000, preserved in the SEC archive, independently records the resort’s opening on 15 October 1998. These are useful fixed points around which to organise an account of redevelopment.
The gap between demolition and opening should not be treated as empty time. A large resort requires planning, construction, specialist trades and the preparation of operations. An opening date compresses that work into one public event, but the event is only the visible endpoint.

What this landmark illustrates
Bellagio belongs in a history of major casinos because it illustrates the large destination resort of the late twentieth century. Its story can be approached through architecture and hospitality rather than through rankings, gaming offers or mutable claims about present-day size.
Reading it alongside the Dunes also brings a cost of reinvention into view: a new landmark can depend on removing an older one. Museum collections and primary records allow the two stories to be considered together, even when only one building remains in the landscape.
