History beyond the gaming floor.
Pralvexuno is an English-language educational publication about the history of casinos and the gambling industry, with an Australian perspective.
What you will find here
The archive looks at the casino as an institution: a building, an employer, a technological environment and a subject of public policy. Its twenty articles connect the first public gambling houses with spa towns, casino cities, resort architecture, machines and written rules.
Historical accounts can become overwhelmed by glamorous imagery and familiar legends. We focus on dated events and explain what those events do—and do not—establish. The opening of a casino is not the beginning of gambling in a society; a famous resort is not necessarily the first resort; a changing floor-area statistic is not a timeless measure of significance.
An Australian perspective
The Australian section distinguishes the history of registered clubs and locally made poker machines from the development of legal casinos. Other articles provide the wider international context, including Venice, Monte-Carlo, Nevada, Macao and New Jersey.
The scope of the publication
Pralvexuno provides reading material for adults aged 18 and over. It offers no gambling facilities, deposits, prizes, accounts, booking services, casino ratings or affiliate recommendations. References to venues identify historical subjects. External sources are linked to document a fact, not to encourage a transaction.
How to explore
Begin with the first public gambling houses, browse the complete archive, or follow the historical timeline. A glossary explains the terms used across the articles. Each article keeps its sources close to the narrative.
How the archive is maintained
The launch edition was reviewed on 21 October 2026. Article bylines identify the publication rather than inventing individual historians or academic credentials. Our editorial policy sets out the evidence standard and the limits of the collection.
