A resort outside downtown
The Nevada State Museum records the opening of El Rancho Vegas on 3 April 1941 along Highway 91. It describes the operation as an early large resort outside downtown, with cottage accommodation and an Old West style. Its significance lies partly in that spatial arrangement.
The roadside setting offered room to organise a visitor’s stay differently from a downtown establishment. Accommodation and shared resort facilities could be spread across a site. Thinking about the plan makes the property more intelligible than treating it only as a name on a timeline.

Before the Flamingo
The industry chronology places El Rancho before the Last Frontier in 1942 and the Flamingo in 1946. The sequence is an important check on the popular idea that one later, better-known property invented the Strip.
Historical prominence and chronological priority are different things. A resort’s visibility in films, biographies or publicity can outgrow the role of earlier developments. Correcting the sequence makes room for a broader account of roadside tourism and hotel enterprise.

The fire and the historical record
Clark County’s fire-service history preserves an account of the fire that destroyed the resort’s principal facilities in 1960. A fire-department account supplies a different kind of evidence from a resort advertisement: it records a destructive event and its operational context.
The name also needs care. The Nevada State Museum explicitly distinguishes the original El Rancho Vegas from the later El Rancho-branded property associated with the former Thunderbird. Names can be reused; a shared name does not establish that two resorts are the same institution.
